# 7 - Noodles and night scenes

Things you must include in your post:

1) A dream sequence of some kind.  You can recall the dream, the whole post can be a dream that you awaken from, you can have a "waking" dream like Milkman with his mother and the flower garden.  You can awaken from a dream like Kafka does and only have the clues of what may have happen but no understanding of the events.

2) The dream can be spurred by the prophecy that your classmate posted in the comment box.  You must use the prophecy in some way. You can have the prophecy in the dream; you can awaken from your dream and read, hear, feel the prophecy and...

3) You character must mention some kind of food, Murakami style.

4) The weather is a perfect day- sunny, warm breeze, but not too hot

Angel - Forced to foster a kid.  Because he speaks Spanish, the home thinks Angel should foster him and teach him English.

Troy should go to creative writing class, but then takes over the class

Lucia - Nigerian mass-emails and take it seriously

Rick - goes Carmen - pizza and ice cream.  Rick has a good time. Carmen doesn't.

Ginger - arrested public intoxication, punches the cop in front of Dreamwood and others get involved.

Kitch - releases some of the footage on the web.

ACTIONS:

A man jumps off the roof of the asylum (Robert Smith), and he is painted completely blue. All the police are called out and all that jazz.

The same man who jumps escaped beforehand and runs around the town and graffitis the secrets of people all over the town (in blue of course). The people who's secrets rare spray painted up around town: Tyler Jacobs, Serenity Kane, Frank Reid Jr., Della Breed, Yesu.

The son of the name sake of Hebert Johnson Rd, Hebert Johnson Jr., comes to the children's home and the retirement home on the same day the man jumps, and it is rumored that he caused (or pushed) the Blue Man to jump.

An idling train leaks massive amounts of blue liquid down towards the retirement home and all the old people have to temporarily go and stay in the asylum.

Give a donation, get a haircut at the children's home.

A blue Subaru outback is following people around, and everyone is encountering it. It appears to be following you. Choose your own reason why.

EVENTS:

The pot hole in front Dreamwood Terrace begins to subtly widen. Hazel gets pushed into the hole by Cole. Once in the hole, Hazel sees a blue light. She follows it and it leads her into the back room of the retail store at the end of Blue Blvd.

#4 - The fire and the truth

Setting: Dark, cloudy and the air is very, very still. There are certain pockets of really cold air and the clouds cover the tops of the taller buildings.

Common character: Leonard the graveyard man.



Interactions with other character: So far we only have the people interactions.

You are to stand around your respective small/large fire with the person on this list.  The person on the right chooses the location and type of fire. The person on the left tells their story.  Then the person on the right tells theirs.  Please be timely in your storytelling. Because we're including a bit of post-modern magical realism, there is something about the fire that makes you tell the person across from you some secret that you've ever told anyone else.  It could be a serious one, or not so serious given the personality of your character and how you are trying to develop her or him.

Blog #3 - 6 degrees of separation

Character development:

Tell us where you live - specifically if you

Because the past is constantly shaping the present, we need to know something about your past.  In this next blog, recount something from your past that reveals something about your character in the present.  Remember, this addition is about character development. For example, looking at a picture of someone on your refrigerator, or a piece of clothing that reminds you of some event, an avoidance of something because of a negative experience.  Drug use does not count as an implicit reference to your past problems.  By recounting something, you are showing rather than telling.

I took the current list of characters and counted 6 spaces to the next character on the list and that is who you are interacting with in this next blog post.  Don't worry, the original list isn't alphabetical, but it is based on the last set of interactions.  Here's the list.  The person on the left should write his/her blog at least by Sunday afternoon so the other character can response.  If you are the other character, you can write #3 when you wish, or wait until Sunday if you want to engage with the other character.

Remember, if you didn't incorporate another character that you were paired with in blog #2, do so in #3.  You can have TWO interactions.   If the character you are paired with has not completed his/her second blog, use the one that's there.  If you wish, curse them under your breath.

6:00 PM Speed dating at the Sunnyside up diner! Brian will be there.

#2: Things that sparkle in the night.

Event:

• Frank's bookstore has an author who sits in the window, but nobody knows who he is.  He is waiting for someone to ask him to sign a copy of his book. Ignatius Bellmont.  Some kind of how-to get and keep friends book.
• Flu outbreak - anyone who gets ill,  heads to the clinic to see Brian, the hot doctor.
• Meteor shower in the middle of the night.
• Micheal's truck drives down Shellac, turns down Main, and somehow glitter is streaming out the back of the slow moving truck. The truck stops at the corner of Main and Blvd. and a small pile of silver glitter gets dumped on the street. 
• Outside of O'Harley's there's a mugging at 2 AM- non-violent, during meteor shower.
• AA meeting: 4:15 in the church of faith
• Telescope fell-off over the top of the building at high noon.  Kid got out of the daycare and is playing in the fountain.

Setting:
Unseasonably warm day/night.

Motif: Things that move, smoke/fog, waffles!

Characters:
Chief Buc - the chief of police, tough but cheerful, and has a strong  fashion sense and seems to distrust any other authority other than his own.
Leonard - gravedigger/groundskeeper/night guard in the graveyard behind the catholic church.

Individual character development:
As Vonnegut once stated:

1. "Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.
2. Every sentence must do one of two things-reveal character or advance the action."

Incorporate both of these into your post. 

#1 - The day started with

For your first blog:

Blog layout:

• Your name should be your blog title
• Add a favorite passage from one of your favorite books under blog description in the settings feature of the blog layout
• Complete your first entry by Thursday night, December 18th, we will read entries on Friday during class. 

Character development:

• Living arrangements.  Be specific.  "Behind the dumpster" isn't specific enough.  Which one?
• Remember you can add any place, object, character that you wish as long as it does "tilt the platform" too much. 
• Something that identifies your character.  A touchstone of sorts that establishes some kind of symbol of your character's life. For example, something that he or she carries in his/her pocket, a tattoo, a photo of a relative, a book, souvenir, etc. 
• Keep it relatively short. Think of this as a short story and not a novel.  Less is more, if the less is written carefully.
• Create some kind of conflict in the first blog.  Whether it is trying to find your keys, being late for an appointment, trying to cram all your dirty clothes into a coin-operated washing machine, or wrestling with a gorilla.
• Go somewhere. 

Setting:

• It is twilight on a foggy, damp day in mid December.  
• The town is someplace where seasons change.
• At 7PM the power in the whole neighborhood goes out for an hour.
